Yours truly spent 4 nights in Bangkok & 4 nights in Pattaya. In Bangkok, we attended the conference during the day. At night, it was sight-seeing and shopping time. I did not buy much, mostly souvenirs for friends and family.
Bangkok's MRT and BTS services (public transport/train) are convenient, famous tourist destinations are easily accessible if you do some homework & research first before going. It'll be better if your hotel is near to any of the stations, so you can save on Tut Tut or Taxi.
